That Was It, My 1st Year in University

I’m very happy to find myself in a position where I do like the course I set taking me down on university roads. Studying at WU has been one of the most surprising and interesting experience so far in life. Right after sipping down my first can of Dr Pepper. Those two experience are very much alike, even though it doesn’t seem so at first glance. It was a very sweet – so were the people -, taught me not to judge too early – the first sip usually doesn’t tell the whole story, and I realized there was something out there I haven’t given a go and thus learned to be more open.

So here’s a warm hello to new friends I made over the last year. I hope I get to spend some of the upcoming years together with you. It was interesting to see many different characters (some more enjoyable than others *cough* *cough* – Nah, I’m just kidding) mixed up in one cage fighting for a common goal. Like hamsters taking turns in running the wheel. Whether that was Barcelona or several exam weeks. We did a good job and we sure can be proud of accomplishments.

Have a great summer, peeps. Stay safe, healthy and tuned. Want to see you return to Vienna in late summer/earily fall as I saw you waving good byes yesterday. Continue reading

Student Loans And Responsible Drinking

What is described below should not happen with the money you’re supposed to pay back with knowledge “purchased” earlier in life in college. If that “student loan” is a scholarship that your country gives you on a monthly basis, please understand that there comes certain responsibility. The tax payer will thank you.

Drink responsibly.

“Eureka, I’ve found it!”

Human kind of thinking is all about creativity. And so is business. We often have a vision, a spark of an idea and then, analysis of our chances of what we can do with that very thought tell us how to proceed. One moment the idea seems very much compelling until we realize there is no use in real life for it… It happens, don’t worry.

I really hope that we all end up saying “Yay, I’ve found that thing!” What do we need to get to the Hooray-moment?

  • Knowing our ABILITIES and the lack thereof.
  • A sparkling VISION and clarity on what we want to do with live.
  • A MARKET that can provide for a living.

Please proceed to the diagram attached.

WU Shortened And Rebranded

For quite some time now the Vienna University of Economics and Business (short WU) has been using a overhauled corporate design. The clumsily long name*. and thus often confused and irritating use of the brand – especially in international matters – were reason enough to implement a renewed logo and corporate identity. The result, a shortened brand name WU.

* in the English translation they crossed out one word: Administration; the German version does not include the – as a Abtrennungsstrich to divide Wirtschafts Universität. Can you call that “haircut” a proximity to German engineering’s efficiency?

Until the brand WU itself has established they plan on using the extended version you can see attached in the comparison image. I wonder how long it will take until full international recognition, which clearly represents the main goal of this rebranding policy. The German speaking university world has already been using the short term WU anyway. After the introduction phase, they will only continue to use the logo with the melted letters WU.

Simpler. Darker. Better?

Before and after. Simpler. Darker. Rebranded. Better?

I was surprised that the change of logo throughout the campus was executed without any big announcement. I received an e-mail today that told me about something I knew already. No big surprise party for our new logo. No shower party for the newly branded? Here’s my theory on why nobody made a big deal about it. Maybe the Aulafest and the ÖH (~student body) elections simply are attention whores (excuse my choice of word, but I am really upset about how penetrating those campaigners are lately) over-consumers and didn’t leave much for this exciting rebrand. I like it. Give it some time.

The website can now be accessed via wu.ac.at as opposed to the former wu-wien.ac.at.

What about you? Do you look WU’s brand-new look?

VIE Always Knew It

Vienna came in at #18.

Vienna came in at #18.

Vie We always knew that Vienna (Airport VIE) was quite a great place to live at. And now it’s official with quite a great result for the city in the Askmen 2009’s Top 29 Best Cities to Live ranking. Ranked number 18, Vienna can be proud being compared to several international cities. Check out the ranking at askmen.com/specials/top_29_cities.

1. Chicago
2. Barcelona
3. San Francisco
18. Vienna

So what is it that makes Vienna so special and one of the 29 “most inhabitable cities for the everyday man.” Although Viennese really like to complain (locally known as “sudern”) and moan about the bad weather we get (especially around this time of the year), we need to realize that it’s actually a nice spot situated along the blue Danube where an amazing thing called Schnitzel (Tourists’ pronounciation likely to sound like Snitzzel) and Schweinsbraten (roast pork) is served. Maybe the sudern part had us come in as #18.

Too Often I Wake Up Shaking

Too often I wake up having an inner monologue with me, myself and I , “Wait I am way out of high school, I kind of believe I graduated (got my Matura, whatever)”. So why do I wake up thinking I have to hand in a German essay on Feminism in Austrian literature again? Right, because not doing your homework got burned into my subconsciousness as a bad bad thing to do years ago. Also, I remember having this dream that I had to somehow being forced to redo my Matura in a Matura 2.0 fashion. Boy, boy,… Who says Austrian schools aren’t efficient. They still have people wake up shaking with fear.

Haven’t had a “nightmare” about university, probably too recent for it to manifest in my gray matter.

Cooking 101 for Students

For the typical student: This could be you. Except not. Do not try this at home, unless you wanna burst into flames...

For the typical student: This could be you. Except not. Do not try this at home, unless you wanna burst into flames...

Got sick of pasta with pesto? Can’t taste any difference between the basil kind and the dried tomato variations? Looks like you run out of cooking skills. A student’s first reaction – that is quite successful on the short term – is to tend to the “local” (university) dining hall (aka Mensa in German). Food that requires zero preparation and no dirt in one’s kitchen seems adequate to one’s eating and cleaning needs and habits. Until student X realizes that there is a cheaper alternative that is more or less obvious to most of “them”. Yeah, cooking by yourself. Continue reading

15 Bucks A Glass?

It’s either Opernball or a Calvin and Hobbes comic explaining the economic downturn.

Btw, this comic covers most vocabulary that you’ll have to handle with in the  EBC1 exam.
