Microwaved Cellphones (The Viral Factor)

When people mention “The New Media”, Web 2.0  or uniformly use the term Facebook or Twitter as an umbrella term (Sillies!), you often hear about stories, videos or other online material having gone “viral.” The WTF Viral factor (as described in this post over at We Love Viral) basically describes how content gets a lot of exponentially growing attention. Person A tell his mom B and a friend C that he saw F’s dad making out with D’s secretary in the company backlot person A did an internship at. As a result mom B tells its coffee round consisting of several other moms of person D, E and F, oh and of course G who brings all the yummy cup cakes, who then,… Okay, we figured out how rumors spread, same technique, different content…

This inevitably leads to the following question. How do you get people’s attention whose childhood taught them to keep their attention span shortened to a minimum and whose radar displays only peak when several people are shot slaughtered put into a microwave and set on defrost mode having them spin on the glass table in there? … I got your attention there. Point proven. Thank you.

WTF & OMG. Ingredients for home-made virally spreading content.

So to sum it up: To have things spread virally, be sure to easily connect people (coffee meet ups, Twitter, Facebook), create unique content that have as many people go “WTF” and this is where it starts getting viral “OMG I need to tell all my buddies”. Both conditions fulfilled, you will achieve a maximum of attraction and exposition. See this example. Cellphone being microwaved.

  • “WTF?” Check.
  • “OMG I need to show my friends!” Check.

Another example just to train yourself in how to have things go viral. The Swine Flu:

  • “WTF? There’s a flu named after swines?” Check.
  • “I may be infected. Should tell my friends I didn’t wash my hands?” Check.

Collaboration Via Music

Vault the brick wall.

This is one beautiful piece of collaboration via the universal medium of music. It shows that music doesn’t know color, doesn’t know nations and can even jump over the brick wall of culture that is still there. Rock solid, it divides people. Even though we have been connected for so long. The contributors to this music video show us what to do. Vault the brick wall. It’s what a monkey would do, so why not give it a try.

Playing For Change.

Also I recommend this video War/No More Trouble.

When You Think It Can’t Be Worse

This is what happens when you think an advertising approach hit rock-bottom. Before you know it, the situation will get worse and is very likely to result in the maximized nuisance concentration. I guess this could be part of Austrian Advertising Landschaft (a series where I show great Austrian adversiting), but sometimes you also need to point out the pointless. Kids, please ask your parents before you watch birdie poop like that… [via brandstaetter]

If I had been invited to the making of this video, God forbid, I could not have guaranteed for anything.

Remember I ranted about the Orange spot? Boy… Telering commercials make me wanna poke my eyes out, rip my ears off and what not else,… So maybe, only maybe, the Orange spots aren’t that bad, but just because the new bottom of Austrian advertising quality has been redefined.

Accident, Emergency – I’ll Keep It

Accidentally I changed my wallpaper to Tina Fey vs Sarah Palin the other day when reading some news page. After panicking (at least over 50% of my screen), I decided to keep it for a while to get into a christmas election mood.

It happened. Accident. Emergency. A la Patrick Wolf

New Debating: Do Something Cute

Amidst all the studying and planning out my weekend I came across with this and I really really couldn’t help sharing. After watching the VP dabate (who took up one third of my mobile internet bandwidth) I really thought this was “cute.” Plus, did you know that roughly 80% of the people who watched the debate thought that Sarah was doing better than they thought they would after having laughed over the CBS interviews and the Saturday Night Live spoofs (The writers didn’t have to do a lot when creating the spoofs, so it doesn’t really matter what video you watch; same text; different purpose – or wait does Sarah – maybe – want to entertain us too?). Well with the expectations set soo high, you betcha, that Sarah will getcha. Betcha. She connected with me. She did.

She connected with me. With this debate scheme. Unbeatable.

She connected with me. With this debate scheme. Unbeatable. Like Oh My Goshhh.

She Got The Nuclear Codes

YouTube -- Matt Damon Rips Sarah Palin. “I wanna know that. I really do.”

Update: Sarah Palin spoof on Saturday Night Live. It’s a really good parody and the quality of answers turn out to be not so different of what you heard (with bleeding ears) on the original.
